When thinking of a concept for my layout, it's good to look at all of my "competitors". See what they've implemented. For example, consider an NFL website.
While you definitely want uniqueness for your site, take a look at very successful websites. In this case, ESPN Sports, KFFL, NFL.com, and a few smaller websites, which aren't as well known. This lets you brainstorm a lot of ideas and tweak what you like in your own design. As time passes, it lets you create your own concepts from scratch, one at a time. If you tried to do it all at once from the start, it gets confusing.
Content is the not the sole important things. Rather, you want to find a way to keep your viewers. It could be contests, an exclusive, or something other thing. This has been the hardest part for many websites.

true! but it's tough when you really don't know how and where to start! hehe... :D
Well you just go and find a picture or something that you want to make as your background. Click customize site, click choose theme, click either an already made layout or custom theme ( to use your own). Upload the photo that you want to use as a background. Then custom all the other things useing the customize colors button or chose an already made scheme. Hope this helps someone.
